Because these stacked elements are actual characters rather than visual styling tags (like HTML or CSS), they travel with the text. The technical engine behind the cursed text effect is a specific class of Unicode characters called Combining Diacritical Marks (specifically the block in the range U+0300 to U+036F). In linguistics, these marks are used for accenting letters in standard languages (for example, adding an accent aigu, grave, or a tilde above a letter).

In standard typography, a combining diacritic has a "zero-width" property, meaning it does not advance the cursor horizontally. Instead, it overlays onto the immediately preceding character. When a Zalgo text generator runs, it deliberately stacks dozens of these combining marks (above, below, or striking through) on a single letter. Because there is no horizontal spacing, the marks overflow vertically, overlapping with adjacent text lines and creating the signature "distorted" or "decaying" look.
